Abington Place

Built in 1889 by Martin Gurry Abington Place was owned by the Wragg family for many years.  The yard is now owned by Mary Slack who is a South African owner / breeder.

Mike de kock has been using the main yard for a few years as a summer base for his Dubai horses but it’s very much a South African yard with a couple of SA trainers using it as a base to travel their horses for international racing . The yard is also used for horses on their way to Dubai from South Africa .

John’s been training in Newmarket since 1995 and took over Beverley House Stables in 1997. During a short-lived career as an amateur jump jockey he rode one winner over fences, notably leading home Richard Dunwoody and Venetia Williams! As a trainer, his best known horses are Largesse, Il Principe, Jack Dawson and Benedict, the winners of 32 races between them. Largesse now stands at stud for his owners Henry and Rosemary Moszkowicz and John has trained a number of his offspring, including Picot de Say, La Gessa and By Storm – all of whom have won for the stable. A keen journalist, John writes a weekly international racing column for Australia’s leading racing paper Winning Post and is a regular guest on At The Races’ international programme.



Luca Cumani

Luca arrived in Newmarket from his native Italy in his early 20s and he has been a highly successful stalwart there ever since. He has trained a multitude of Group 1 winners all over the world, including seven Classic winners, most famous of which were his two Derby winners Kahyasi (1988) and High Rise (1998). The operation at Bedford House stables run by Luca and his wife Sara is showing no sign of slowing down as proved by Postponed giving the yard a deserved success in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July.



Ed Dunlop

Son of 10 time British Classic winner, John Dunlop, Ed comes from an illustrious racing family, but he has certainly carved his own path in the sport. He has trained 29 Group and Grade 1 winners himself, including two Oaks with champion mares Ouija Board and Snow Fairy. Red Cadeaux is his globetrotting superstar and has accumulated an incredible £5 million in prizemoney. 2015 has been another bumper year with Trip To Paris winning the Ascot Gold Cup.



James Eustace

Park Lodge Stables is home to James and Gay Eustace and is steeped in history having been first established in the 18th Century. The most famous inmate was Blue Peter who won the 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby in 1939 and was favourite to win the Triple Crown. James is a multiple Group race winning trainer in four countries across two continents.




James Fanshawe

Unquestionably one of the most respected figures on the British Turf, James has sent out a host of top class winners under both codes over a variety of distances from Pegasus Stables. Despite having only a handful of jumpers, he has managed to win the Champion Hurdle twice – with Royal Gait in 1992 and Hors La Loi III 10 years later. His flagbearers on the flat over the years have included the brilliant miler Soviet Song, top-class stayer Invermark and high-class sprinter Society Rock.



Julia Feilden

Peter Feilden trained for over 25 years, so it was hardly surprising when his daughter Julia embarked on a career in racing. After her first job as racing secretary for Clive Brittain, she decided to start training racehorses herself. Amongst Julia’s vast array of successes include Spirit of Sharjah, the multiple pattern race winner and King Flyer who earned over £100,000 prize money during a memorable career.




Charlie Fellowes

In January 2014 Charlie joined the training ranks, and as the youngest licensed trainer in the country, the pressure was on him to prove to all of the owners that their faith had not been misplaced. Charlie was lucky enough to move yards half way through the year, and alongside a fantastic team of experienced horsemen, they have thoroughly enjoyed their first season so far.




Ilka Gansera-Lévêque (11)

Ilka was an assistant trainer in the USA and apprentice jockey in Germany prior to graduating from vetschool in 2009.  She gained invaluable experience ‘breaking’ youngstock when working under Monty Roberts. Ilka successfully completed her British Trainer’s Course in 2012. She prides herself on being the only woman trainer who is also a practising vet in Newmarket which ensures all her horses get personal treatment.


Gay Kelleway Racing

Gay rode her first winner on the flat for leading trainer Clive Brittain and at the tender age of 17 years old finished second in the ladies Amateur Championship, she then won it at 18, check to see if anyone else has won it that young!  After that she turned professional and became Champion Professional Lady Rider three years in a row. Gay was the first woman to ride in a Gold Cup at Ascot on Pretty Picture and the first woman to ride a winner at Royal Ascot when her horse Sprowston Boy won. In total, Gay rode some 60 winners, no mean feat in a country where racing is 95% male orientated.



Martyn Meade

Martyn Meade trained his first national hunt winner in 1972 but has since the 1980s, he has focussed on flat racing, boasting impressive strike rates with two-year-olds such as Lunar Mist who won 6 times as a juvenile. His move to Sefton Lodge marked the beginning of a new era with a commitment to producing top class horses and that has become immediately apparent with Irish Rookie just being beaten by Erveyda in the French 1000 Guineas this year. The future certainly looks bright for the Meade stable.

Denis Quinn based out of Marlborough House Stables currently has 12 horses in training at his small yard. His current horses include 2015 winners Red Flute and his highest rated horse Deep Blue Diamond.

Since starting out in 2004, David has established himself as one of the leading trainers in the country having landed multiple Group and Grade 1 successes with the likes of I’m A Dreamer, Madame Chiang, Sheikhzayedroad, Trade Storm and of course Dream Ahead who was crowned Europe’s champion sprinter in 2011. His current stable star is impressive Royal Ascot winner Balios.

The National Stud is the showcase for British Thoroughbred breeding. It has been owned by the Jockey Club since 2008. It comprises over 500 acres of prime pastureland on the edge of Newmarket. Its facilities include accomodation for eight stallions and up to 200 mares in nine seperate yards.
